Notable set of six paint-decorated thumb-back windsor side chairs
DECORATION BY LEANDER HOUGHTON (1814-1879)
Probably Newburyport, Massachusetts, circa 1835-1840
Maple and pine, original free-hand and stencil painted decoration on a yellow ground, each; 34 x 16 x 15 ½ inches. One chair is signed on the front of the crest rail within the decoration: “Leander Houghton.” Inscribed and numbered on the underside of the seats “S (or I.) Demerill’s/Chairs.” These chairs belong to a rare category of documented American paint-decorated furniture. In a possibly unique manner, the decorator of these chairs, Leander Houghton, has worked his signature into the black scrolled decoration on one of the crest rails. Ex Jane Katcher collection.
