Since 1995 David A. Schorsch has been affiliated with Eileen M. Smiles in Woodbury, Connecticut, where they maintain a gallery in a restored early 19th century building in the heart of the town’s historic district.

Born into a family of antiques collectors and dealers, David A. Schorsch has become a dominant presence in the American antiques business. David began working in the antiques business with his mother Peggy at the age of thirteen.  In 1979, age fifteen, he was the youngest dealer ever to exhibit at the prestigious Connecticut Antiques Show in Hartford. Over the years, David has participated in major antique shows throughout the country and is a nationally recognized expert and specialist in various categories of American antiques and folk art. Over a three decade long association David and the late Peggy Schorsch were the principal advisors in the formation of the renown collection of Ralph Esmerian Collection.

David has lectured in numerous venues including The Winter Antiques Show, The American Folk Art Museum, The Fenimore Art Museum and The de Young Museum in San Francisco  He has been profiled extensively in print which is referenced on our publications page as well as on television, including Midday Live with Bill Boggs, CNN,  and The Charlie Rose Show broadcast on PBS.

As a nationally recognized expert, David has made valuable scholarly contributions to the field through books and articles which are referenced in the “Scholarship” tab of this site.  One of his most significant achievements came with the publication of Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence, Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana, Volume I and II, published by Yale University Press, in which David and Eileen were involved with all phases of its development.  David is a principal advisor in the web journal “Americana Insights” founded by Jane Katcher in 2020.

Eileen M. Smiles

With an intuitive business sense, coupled with a comprehensive knowledge of the decorative arts, Eileen Michaelis Smiles represents a rare union of talent in the art world. She combined an innate entrepreneurial spirit with a formal education in Art History by earning an undergraduate degree from Newcomb College, Tulane University, and a Masters Degree in the History of Decorative Arts from The Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parson School of Design.

Since 1995 Eileen has been specializing in the purchase, sale, and brokerage of museum quality American decorative arts of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to acting as editor and co-author for all gallery publications, she was a co-author of the catalog section of Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence: Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana (Yale University Press, 2005) and Apple for the Teacher (Harry N. Abrams, 2005).

Now a mother of two, Eileen has combined her love of American folk art and interest in children’s literature by publishing American Folk Art ABC (2002), and American Quilts: A Book of Patchwork Picture Puzzles (2002).

In the spring of 2023 Eileen launched Eileen M. Smiles, a design business creating home textiles and wall coverings that celebrate antique and vintage folk art and design. She has taken her love of antique objects and her passion for art and pattern to create modern designs that embrace the traditions of historical decorative arts. Each pattern incorporates motifs from a unique artwork in Eileen and David’s curated archive collection of American decorative arts.
