Eileen M. Smiles

With an intuitive business sense, coupled with a comprehensive knowledge of the decorative arts, Eileen Michaelis Smiles represents a rare union of talent in the art world. She combined an innate entrepreneurial spirit with a formal education in Art History by earning an undergraduate degree from Newcomb College, Tulane University, and a Masters Degree in the History of Decorative Arts from The Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parson School of Design. Since 1995 Eileen has been specializing in the purchase, sale, and brokerage of museum quality American decorative arts of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to acting as editor and co- author for all gallery publications, she was a co-author of the catalog section of Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence: Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana (Yale University Press, 2005) and Apple for the Teacher (Harry N. Abrams, 2005). Now a mother of two, Eileen has combined her love of American folk art and interest in children’s literature by publishing American Folk Art ABC (2002), and American Quilts: A Book of Patchwork Picture Puzzles (2002).
