This is one of two watercolor drawings of Fancy Parrots by Enoch A. Titus executed when he was about fourteen years old, likely done as a school exercise. Its mate, identically titled and framed, is inscribed “By Enoch A. Titus March 10th 1835,” and illustrated in Sumpter T. Priddy, American Fancy, Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840 (Milwaukee, 2004), fig. 9, p. xxv.
Enoch A. Titus was the son of Joab Titus (1779-1866) and Mary Polly Christopher (1784-1862). Enoch is recorded in the 1850 as living in Hopewell, New Jersey as a farmer.
